I have recently gotten into 'genealogy', researching Leonard Hillman Daggett.

He enlisted as a private in Co. H 9th Maine Infantry on August 7, 1861, for 3 years. He was mustered in on Sept 22, 1861. At enlistment he was 18 and working as a farm laborer in Wesley, Me - where he joined.

He was born in New Brunswick.

He was promoted to Corporal and re-enlisted in the veterans Volunteers on Jan 01, 1864.

He was mustered out and honorably discharged on july 13, 1865.

The above information was obtained from the Maine State Archives. He returned to Calais, married and ultimately resided in Robbinston, Me. 1870 census lists his place of birth as New Brunswick and column 19 is not 'ticked', denoting that he did not naturalize to US citizenship. Verifiable in 1870 census for Washington County, Robbinston township.

As yet to be verified, family history has him dying 1870 of war wounds. He did not apply for a pension and neither did his widow. Two years later, his widow remarried and thier only child went to live with grandparents.

I have reviewed several web sites for Canadians in the Civil War and have been trying to see if I can not somehow get this worthy soldier listed. The confusion comes in where he listed his residence as Wesley, but enlistment papers has him born in NB.

Thank you for at least asking, Sincerely, Susan Corey p.s. If you can manage to have him listed on an appropriate web site, please let me know. Again, Thank You!
